![]() The cry - surely produced by some completely ordinary creature, they told themselves - had got closer. At first, the sentinels had paid in no heed, but now they squinted into the distance towards its apparent source in the south. The forest, whose multitude of little noises usually started rustling into like at this hour of the morning, was completely silent, but for a cry that had been heard several times during the night. They huddled around the braziers, trying in vain to warm up. The Bontarian outposts, held by the knights of the Order, were white with the first signs of frost, the sentinels numb from the early onset of winter. The dawn was cold, and light could barely penetrate the morning gloom. A year passed before it faced its first battle. The city was built to counter the rise of Brakmar and Rushu's following. ![]() One month had been long enough for the three protectors to build the city, with the help of the ten gods. Just like Jiva and Pouchecot, the protectors of Javian and Frauguctor respectively, he had moved into the brand new city of Bonta. He had also asked Menalt centaur warrior and commander of the Order of Valiant Heart, to be the protector of Martalo, the month of storms and showers. Xelor, meanwhile, had decided that Jiva was worthy of succeeding Solar. This city would become his temple, and would have his followers! For Rushu intended to convert the other gods' disciples to worship him: they would sport red wings and would look like demons! And that's how the city of Brakmar, built in one night by Rushu himself, was devoted to the demon lord's sect. But he hand been refused! And a goddess called Sacrier had snatched his place in the pantheon for herself! By way of compensation, Rushu had asked Djaul to build a whole city in his honour. ![]() The lord of the demons wanted to become a god too, to be venerated by followers made in his image. All of this created a sense of instability across the World, and the protective aura of the Dofus became sullied by such intense greed.ĭespite this, Rushu remained unsatisfied. Something told Djaul that, sooner or later, he would be able to use the dragon to his advantage. And though his attempt at stealing the Dofus guarded by Aguabrial had been unsuccessful, it had led to the birth of a quick-tempered and unpredictable dragon named Bolgrot. Since then, the World had lived in the fearful shadow of Rushu's henchman, who had killed the great Solar with his own hands. Rushu had crushed a piece of Xelor's Clock and imposed Djaul as the protector of Descendre. a warning to foolhardy and careless youths.īesides these whispered night-time stories, there is no proof to be found, as all the knights disappeared, body and soul, on one cold night in Septangel. If their story has survived long enough to reach our ears, it is only because it was recounted secretly, in low voices during late-night gatherings. But nay! This was not to be, such was the fear their fate inspired in those who heard about it. Guided by Menalt the centaur, their tragic destiny should have been narrated by all the heralds and bards of the World of Eleven, and set in stone to travel on through the ages. ![]() The story of the knights of the Order of the Valiant Heart should have been part of History with a capital H - the one written about in books, the one for which statues are erected. The disorder which started creeping its way across the territories was to continue until war burst out between Bonta and Brakmar, the two cities born from the endeavours of the protectors of the months. No-one knew it yet but the soft, harmonious aura of the Dofus in which the World had previously bathed had been tainted. The World of Twelve was plunged into an era of darkness. ![]()

![]() ![]() He has a style that is clean and suited to the spooky atmosphere of Gotham Academy. Kerschl’s art was as delightful as the story. It wrapped up neatly but still left enough loose ends to make the reader want to keep coming back. Each issue ends on a cliffhanger that is just dramatic enough to keep the reader turning the pages, and the story never felt tired or contrived. Along the way the ghost’s identity is revealed, and even though what happened to Olive over the summer has yet to be explained, just enough clues are dropped to keep the reader engaged. It balanced well between Olive’s personal drama and the mystery of the North Hall. Throughout the book, many of the teachers are introduced as well, a cast of characters that is just as eclectic as the kids. He always wears sunglasses and tries to pass himself off as cool and suave. He’s a troublemaker, selling fireworks to the other kids, and is also known as a lock-picker and a sneak. As they investigate the mystery, she and Olive become more friendly, or at least less antagonistic. She believes in the occult and believes she summoned the ghost. Pomeline starts out as an antagonist to Olive. She views the world around her through role playing, describing people with “+” stats and likening situations to RPG scenarios. She is one year younger than Olive, but they are best friends. She gives as good as she gets and isn’t afraid to run in when someone is in trouble. She has a no-nonsense attitude about the world and doesn’t believe in the supernatural. It’s an ensemble series with a great cast, and Olive is a great lead. I really enjoyed this first volume of Gotham Academy, which collects the first six issues. As Olive tries to navigate her new life situation, she has to contend with the ghost of Millie Jane Cobblepot haunting the girls’ dorm, classmates who believe they summoned the ghost, an escaped convict from Arkham Asylum living in the secret passages in the Academy, and her sudden fear and hatred of all things bat-like, including the Batman. This is complicated by the fact that Kyle’s little sister, Mia, aka Maps, is now going to the school, and Olive is her guide for her first year. A mysterious incident that involved the north building has left Olive with no memory of the summer, and as a result, she has pulled away from her friends and is considering breaking up with her boyfriend, the school’s tennis star Kyle Mizoguchi. Her mother has been in the hospital, so she lives on campus. Gotham Academy follows Olive Silverlock, a second year student who is attending Gotham Academy on a scholarship from the Wayne Foundation. The story is the perfect balance of spooky, adventurous fun, and I found myself unable to stop turning pages. I am happy to say I was not disappointed with this first volume. I’ve never been much of a DC Comics fan, particularly in recent years with their emphasis on dark and gritty stories, but I have heard so many good things about Gotham Academy that I decided to try it out. ![]() ![]() ![]() Modern Times has the Chaplin brand of humor in spades, as well as the heart that Chaplin skillfully weaves throughout his comedies.
